Get to know your skin: Black Skin

From my three decades of experience working with diverse skin types, I have seen a common misconception that Black skin is inherently tough and resilient, capable of enduring aggressive treatments. Contrary to widespread belief, black skin is fragile, the presence of highly active melanin cells in the skin makes it susceptible to rapid discolouration.
Therefore, I would always recommend consulting a professional, like myself, to assess your specific skin concerns. While there are numerous products and treatments available, it is crucial to adopt a nuanced and tailored approach that addresses the unique characteristics of your skin.

Black skin is characterised by its rich melanin content, which provides natural UV protection. However, it also faces unique challenges such as hyperpigmentation and dryness due to a lower ceramide level. Understanding these factors allows for tailored skincare routines that address hydration, manage breakouts (including razor bumps and acne), and prevent dark spots.

Key Characteristics

Melanin rich: Higher melanin levels provide natural sun protection but can also lead to darker spots (hyperpigmentation).

Oilier Skin: Black skin often has higher sebum production, which can result in clogged pores and breakouts.

Drier Skin: Paradoxically, black skin may have fewer ceramides, essential for moisture retention, leading to dryness.

Thick Collagen: Black skin has tightly packed collagen bundles, which are strong but prone to keloids (raised scars) and stretch marks.

Common Concerns and Solutions

Hyperpigmentation: Sun exposure, inflammation (acne, ingrown hairs), and certain skincare products can cause dark spots. Solution: Daily use of SPF 30+, Vitamin C, niacinamide, and gentle exfoliation.

Dryness: Lack of ceramides can cause dryness.

Solution: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and rich moisturisers.

Acne or razor bumps: Clogged pores, inflammation, and irritation from shaving can cause acne and razor bumps.

Solution: Salicylic acid (BHA), gentle cleansing, and proper shaving techniques.

Keloid scarring: Overproduction of collagen during healing can result in keloids or scars.

Solution: Treat inflammation promptly and avoid deep picking or picking at the scars.

Skincare routine tips

Cleanse Gently: Use a mild cleanser to remove excess oil without stripping skin.

Hydrate Deeply: Apply hyaluronic acid and ceramide-rich products.

Target Concerns: Use serums for dark spots (Vitamin C) or acne (niacinamide, BHA).

Protect: Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is crucial to prevent spots and collagen damage.

Moisturise: Lock in hydration with a good moisturiser.
